It was Tanner's first pinewood derby, his favorite show a few years ago was Down and Derby. I think he was thinking/hoping his dad would be a little more involved in the process. But Jason really left it up to him (and maybe the fact that Jason never participated in a pinewood derby he didn't know what he was doing....might have played a part). Tanner super to design his car, and I think he was all about the looks and not how fast it would be. He designed it on paper first and then traced it on his block of wood. Jason and Tanner cut it out one Saturday and then it sat waiting to be sanded for a few weeks. It was getting close to the official race day and Jason has been traveling quite a bit so I enlisted the help of my dad. We spent an evening at their house and my cute dad helped Tanner get it nice and smooth and ready to paint. Jason and Tanner painted the car the Sunday before the derby, and Jason put the wheels on,(not knowing that their was a trick to putting the wheels on). I thought that we were all ready to go, but when I took Tanner to weigh his car it was wayyy too light. Jason was out of town, and I really didn't want to deal with putting weights on etc. Once again my dad came and saved the day. He came to our house before the race and we put some of the weights on only to find out it wouldn't work on the track. We made a few last minute fixes and it was all ready to race! Tanner was a little disappointed that he didn't win but glad we made it through our first Pinewood Derby.
